There are a variety of "tree" squirrels in the United States. In South Dakota you may find the Eastern Gray Squirrel along the eastern border of the state; the Red Squirrel in the far west; and the Northern Flying Squirrel in parts of the Black Hills.
By far the most common species in the state is the Eastern Fox Squirrel, found in all but the northwestern corner.
Fox squirrels are as likely to be found on the ground as in trees. They are common in more open areas, including open forests and woodlands, shelterbelts, and wooded strips along streams and rivers. They are msot active after sunrise and in the late afternoon. during cold winters, they may shift their activity to midday.
