Common Snipe

Snipe are shorebirds similar in looks to woodcock. They are shy birds and conceal themselves close to ground vegetation on the edge of wetlands. They do not flush easily, and exhibit a rapid erratic flight while making a "scaipe" call.  Take care not to mistake other non-hunted shorebirds for snipe while in the field.

Snipe are found around lakes, sloughs, marshes, wet fields, and other wetland areas in South Dakota. The bird is approximately nine inches long and noted for its long bill that it uses to forage for invertebrates in the mud.
