If the fish is of legal length/species to harvest, you may keep both the fish and the tag.  If the fish cannot be harvested, you may remove the tag to keep it or release the fish with the tag intact. 

While GFP wants all tags reported for data analysis, not all tags qualify for a reward, and only reward tags need to be verified. Reward tags will be clearly marked "reward." To claim the reward, you may submit an image of the tag showing the tag number along with your tag report, or you can have the tag verified by a North Dakota or South Dakota wildlife official. If submitting a photo, the tag number needs to be clearly visible to be eligible for reward payment.

Tag certificates are generally sent to anglers within 2 weeks of reporting. However, during periods of exceptionally high tag returns, catch certificates will be sent as soon as possible in the order that they are submitted.  If requested, additional information about the fish can also be provided.
