huntsafe Volunteer information


Thank you for your interest in becoming an instructor for our HuntSAFE and Bowhunter Education classes. These courses, vital to both the present and future of our sports, are only possible through the help of volunteers like you.


We require over 250 volunteer to carry out this program by teaching firearms safety, conservation and responsibility to thousands of students across the state.

If you would like to become a member of this elite team contact a Conservation Officer in your county or area to get an application.

Requirements to become a HuntSAFE volunteer include:

  • Must be a minimum age of 18
  • Completion of a state approved safety course
  • Attending and/or participating in an ongoing class and a willingness to undergo a basic background check
  • Local Conservation Officers and their Supervisors have the ultimate responsibility for approving new instructors

Bowhunter Education

South Dakota is one of 12 states that require mandatory bow hunter education. To become an instructor, contact the HuntSAFE office in Pierre for an application.

Your name and contact information will be forwarded to a Master Instructor in your area for follow-up training.

Requirements to become an instructor include:

  • Must be a minimum age of 18
  • Attendance and/or participation in two bowhunter education classes, and an instructor training, and a willingness to undergo a basic background check
