Llewellyn Johns Recreation Area

/userdocs/Llewellyn Johns Recreation Area

A small, get-away park, Llewellyn Johns' ten campsites offer a quiet camping experience. Nearby Shadehill Recreation Area offers recreational opportunities as well as points of historical interest to keep you busy all day. Or, if you prefer peace and quiet, this is a great campground to just sit back and relax.

Many historic figures have crossed through the area, including Hugh Glass and Custer's 1874 Expedition. In 1823, Glass was attacked by a grizzly bear in this area, which is documented in the novel Lord Grizzly.

Park Rating

Fire Restriction

The park is currently under a burn ban. Open fires are prohibited. Self-contained propane fire pits and grills are allowed. Unseasonably warm and dry conditions have caused significant drought and high fire danger in the area.

  • No campfires or open burning allowed anywhere on lands managed by GFP
  • Firepits and propane grills, with reasonable flame lengths, fueled by LP (propane) that can be controlled with a valve will be allowed
  • Charcoal BBG grills will be allowed for cooking as long as they have a lid that can completely cover the grill and the lid remains on the grill while cooking.
  • All charcoal will need to be soaked with water immediately after cooking.
  • Pellet grills will be allowed.
