October 28, 2025

PIERRE, S.D. - The South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks (GFP) today announced that Capitol Lake will open for public fishing October 30 with a kick off event scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. central time.

Governor Larry Rhoden will be present along with several GFP staff to host an open house event that is open to all ages.

"Anglers can expect to catch rainbow trout, largemouth bass, bluegill, catfish, carp, and bullhead," said Jason Jungwirth, GFP Aquatic Habitat and Access Biologist. "In the past two weeks we have stocked approximately 3,000 rainbow trout that are ready to be caught."

Capitol Lake will be open to the public with no age restriction on those who are allowed to fish. Anglers can fish from sunrise to sunset, and all fishing must take place from the shore. Signs have been placed to show the areas that are open and closed to fishing respectively.

"We are excited to have this new fishing opportunity for the Pierre area, and we're looking forward to celebrating with a big event," continued Jungwirth. "Both kids and adults are encouraged to join us at 4 p.m., we will have limited fishing rods and bait available, and staff will be there to assist anglers and answer their questions."

Anglers seeking rods, baits, or assistance should look for the First Catch Center trailer across from Hyde Stadium.

Following this event, fishing will be open to the public, and the fishery will continued to be stocked by GFP.
