GFP Offers Opportunity for Comment on Biennial Threatened and Endangered Species Status Reviews
October 10, 2024Pierre, S.D.- South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks (GFP) is seeking comments on the Biennial Review of the South Dakota Threatened and Endangered Species List.
The GFP Commission conducts a review of the state’s list of threatened and endangered species every two years, and may amend the list by appropriate additions or deletions.
In 2018, GFP staff drafted status reviews for all state threatened and endangered (T&E) species. This helped define the current level of knowledge and identified monitoring and research priorities needed to develop and meet downlisting and delisting goals. Downlisting and/or delisting criteria were identified if supporting information was provided. Downlisting a species changes its status from state endangered to threatened. Delisting a species removes it from the state T&E list.
Staff have identified state downlisting and/or delisting goals for 12 species. Five species are also federally listed, and state recovery will be linked to federal recovery goals. Downlisting and/or delisting criteria were identified if supporting information was provided. Four species lacked sufficient information to set downlisting and/or delisting goals.
Recently, staff updated the status reviews with new information, but did not recommend any changes for the Commission’s consideration. The public is offered the opportunity to comment on the content of the status reviews, including providing new information.
Comments on the 2024 draft version of the T&E Status Reviews will be accepted through November 3, 2024. Comments must include your full name and city of residence and be received by the deadline.
