Custer State Park Announces Trail Upgrades and Temporary Closures
August 21, 2024Pierre, S.D.- The South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks today announced the start of a significant trail upgrade project aimed at enhancing the visitor experience and preserving the natural beauty of Custer State Park. To facilitate these improvements, portions of the Sylvan Lake Shoreline Trail will be temporarily closed, while the entire Sunday Gulch Trail will be closed starting September 9, 2024, and continue into the spring of 2025.
These upgrades are integral to the 2019 Sylvan Lake Master Plan, a community-assisted initiative designed to improve Sylvan Lake resources, amenities, and accessibility. The project will include rerouting sections of the Sylvan Lake Shoreline Trail, constructing new boardwalks and observation decks, and installing informative interpretive signs. These improvements will assist Custer State Park with resource protection and sustainability for future generations to come.
“While these closures may temporarily cause an inconvenience, we are confident that the long-term benefits of these improvements will greatly enhance the park experience for everyone as well as protect the future of one of our more iconic areas of the park,” said Lydia Austin, Visitor Services Supervisor at Custer State Park.
The park is committed to keeping the public informed throughout the project and will provide regular updates on progress. Alternative trails and access points will remain open during the construction period.
