Kanago Ramp on Waubay Lake Closed for Maintenance

September 14, 2023

PIERRE, S.D. – The South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks (GFP) today announced that Kanago boat ramp on Waubay Lake will be temporarily closed for maintenance, beginning Monday, September 18.

“This project is a full two-lane boat ramp replacement, which will greatly improve the quality of the access point,” said Adam Kulesa, Park Planning and Development Administrator. “Boaters previously had to back their trailers much farther in to the water to get to an adequate depth to launch their boats, and this project will alleviate that.”

The new ramp will be built out into the water directly on top of the existing ramp. This will give the new ramp a more desirable slope percentage that is consistent with other ramps across the state. This will also address problems with heavy siltation, an issue that had been present previously.

The Kanago boat ramp is located on the west side of Waubay Lake, approximately 5 miles north of Webster. Individuals looking to access Waubay Lake are encouraged to utilize the Grenville Ramp, located on the north side of the lake.

“We anticipate this project will be completed within approximately four weeks,” concluded Kulesa. “We appreciate the public’s patience during this time and look forward to having a much more desirable ramp in place.”

A complete list of access points for Waubay Lake, and other waterbodies across the state, can be found on GFP’s Public Water Access map.
