November 27, 2020

PIERRE, S.D. – The outdoors are open and now is the perfect time to try a new winter activity! The Custer State Park Winter Trail Challenge kicks off today, Nov. 27 and will run through April 5.

“The Winter Trail Challenge is a great way to enjoy the trails of Custer State Park,” said Matt Snyder, Parks Regional Supervisor. “These hikes are a whole new experience with the sights and sounds of the winter season. It’s the perfect way to get outside and enjoy some fresh air.”

The 2020-2021 Winter Trail Challenge consists of five hikes and the chance to try snowshoeing. To participate, simply pick up a Trail Challenge flyer at the Custer State Park Visitor Center any time from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., seven days per week. Snowshoe rental is also available through the Visitor Center.

Hike all the trails listed and take a selfie at each Winter Trail Challenge sign. Upon completion, participants will show their photos to park staff at the Visitor Center to earn the 2020-21 Winter Trail Challenge pin.

All forms must be turned in by April 9, 2021 to earn the pin.

There is no fee to participate in the Winter Trail Challenge, or to check out snowshoes. However, a park entrance license is required to enter Custer State Park. An entrance license may be purchased at the Custer State Park Office from 8 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. during the week, or at the Visitor Center from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. seven days per week. In observance of the holiday, the Visitor Center will be closed Christmas Day.
