Lake Thompson, Walker’s Point Rec Areas Open
PIERRE, S.D. – Two state park recreation areas have reopened after difficulty with flooding.
Walker's Point Recreation Area near Madison is open, and all facilities are accessible. However, officials warn that the park’s status could be affected by substantial rainfall. Campers will be notified if the situation changes before the weekend.
Lake Thompson Recreation Area is also open. There is currently water over the road into the park, but all facilities are accessible.
“There is a stretch of road about 1400 feet long that has water over it, near the beach,” said Becky Graff, district park manager. “This is not a new occurrence this summer, but the lake levels are now 6 feet over the full mark. This means that the water over the road varies in depth anywhere from 2 inches to 6 inches in spots.”
Park visitors to Lake Thompson should also be aware that sand may wash onto the road.
“If the wind is coming from the southeast, south, southwest or west, we will have sand on the road,” said Graff. “Park staff is working hard to keep the sand off the road and the park accessible to the public, but there may be times when we have to temporarily close the road in order to get it cleaned off.”
Any closures will be posted on the Game, Fish & Parks Facebook page. For more information on park status, contact each park directly. A full list of parks can be found at gfp.sd.gov/parks/findpark.
