High Water Causes GFP to Declare No Wake Zones on West Oakwood and Lake Campbell
PIERRE, S.D. – Locally heavy rains have caused South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks Secretary, Kelly Hepler, to declare temporary "no wake zones" on West Oakwood and Lake Campbell in Brookings County.
The requests for the no wake zones came from the respective presidents of the Lake Campbell Improvement Association and the West Oakwood Lake Development Association.
In an executive order from earlier this year, Governor Kristi Noem named Helper a temporary designee, giving him the ability to create such restrictions.
The Lake Campbell no wake zone will be within 300 feet of the shoreline for the entire lake, while the West Oakwood designation will be for within 300 feet of the shoreline of the south portion of the lake in front of the lakeshore cabins. The north end of West Oakwood would not have the no wake zone and be available for recreational boating.
The no wake zone will be in place until high water conditions subside.
