Fire Departments Respond to Fire at Adams Homestead

MCCOOK LAKE, S.D. – A small grass fire burned about five acres at Adams Homestead and Nature Preserve near McCook Lake over the weekend, but park staff says there was no damage to buildings or wildlife.

On Sunday, March 31, a grass fire started outside the park but crossed over into the state nature area on the west side of the Lake Loop Trail. The North Sioux City and Jefferson Fire Departments responded and contained the fire.

“We would like to thank the North Sioux City and Jefferson Fire Departments for their hard work and dedication to make sure the fire did not spread any further on the Lake Loop at Adams Homestead and Nature Preserve,” said Park Manager Jody Moats. “The land will recover soon and new growth will be seen in the next couple of weeks.”

After closing for assessment on Sunday afternoon, the Lake Loop Trail is now open and accessible. Trail users are asked to stay out of the burned areas for their safety.
