GFP to Host Halloween Events

PIERRE, S.D. – South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks (GFP) will host trick-or-treaters at special events this Halloween season.

There is no cost to participate in the hikes, but a park entrance license is required where applicable. Participants should wear comfortable hiking shoes and dress for the weather. Children must be accompanied by adults. Costumes are encouraged for the hikes but not required.

Haunted Fort and Trick-or-Treat

October 13

Fort Sisseton Historic State Park - Lake City

From 1-5 p.m. CDT enjoy the fort in a friendly, non-scary setting. Trick-or-treat, make a Halloween craft and enjoy a yummy treat.

From 8-11 p.m., however, things get spooky! The fort buildings are open for visitors to explore, enjoy a hayrack ride with ghost stories or talk to the author of Haunted Places in South Dakota.

Forest Drive Fright Night

October 20, 3 p.m. CDT

Richmond Lake Recreation Area - Aberdeen

Forest Drive Fright Night is a fun, non-scary event with a Halloween theme offering games for all ages, a hayride, scavenger hunt, prizes, snacks and warm drinks. Participants are encouraged to wear their favorite Halloween costume.

The event is held in the Forest Drive area of Richmond Recreation Area.

Halloween Hike: Selfies and Groupies!

October 20, 3-6 p.m. CDT

Outdoor Campus-East - Sioux Falls

Learn the names of different groups of animals that call South Dakota home. For example, a gang of elk or an army of frogs, or a cloud of grasshoppers! This year’s hike will have lots of fun and interesting a activities for kids of all ages (even grownups!) Wrap up the hike with s’mores at our fire pits!

Halloween Hike

The Outdoor Campus-West - Rapid City

Wear your costumes and come for fun, games, crafts, and an evening hike. This event is for the whole family with hikes appropriate for younger children, older children, and adults.

Halloween Night Hike

October 26-27, 5:30 - 8 p.m. MDT

Custer State Park - Custer

This event allows participants to hike a paved path along a "creepy" route, consisting of costumed characters. The characters humor their audiences with short skits about the natural history of various critters living in Custer State Park and the Black Hills.

Hikes take place every 15 minutes from 5:30-8 p.m. MT on Oct 26 and 27.

Big Sioux Recreation Area - Brandon

Dress in your favorite Halloween costume and trick-or-treat along our decorated trail. Take the reflector challenge by finding our many reflecting signs hidden along the trail. Great Halloween fun for all ages.

Oakwood Lakes State Park - Bruce

Join us for a fun afternoon of Halloween activities including hay rides, face painting, trick-or-treat tables, a scavenger hunt and games. Fun for the whole family!

Trick-or-Treat Trails

October 28, 4 p.m. CDT

LaFramboise Island Nature Area - Pierre

Hike through the wooded trail to sponsor stations, where you'll find candy and other promotional items for the kids. Kids will be greeted by a variety of mascots along the way. Stop by the picnic shelter at the end for some s'mores and hot cocoa or cider.

We encourage kids and adults to dress up in their best Halloween costumes. Pets on a leash are welcome.

This event features 12 or more sponsors, from local businesses to state and federal agencies.
