BIGHORN SHEEP SEASON PROPOSED WITH INCREASED OPPORTUNITIES

PIERRE, S.D. – The South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks (GFP) Commission proposed up to a total of eight bighorn sheep licenses available in four hunting units for the 2020 season.

PIERRE, S.D. - At their January meeting, the Game, Fish and Parks Commission accepted a petition submitted by a member of the public to establish 500 nonresident, special buck licenses East River.

COMMISSION CONSIDERS THE USE OF RIFLES FOR WEST RIVER, PRIVATE LAND SPRING TURKEY SEASON

PIERRE, S.D. – At their December meeting, the South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks Commission accepted a proposal that would allow the use of rifles to hunt turkeys on private land during the West River spring turkey season.

COMMISSION EXPANDS ENDEMIC AREA RELATED TO CHRONIC WASTING DISEASE

PIERRE, S.D. – The South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks Commission added several deer and elk hunting units to the chronic wasting disease (CWD) endemic area. Results from surveillance efforts have detected CWD in seven new counties this past fall.

GFP COMMISSION PROPOSES ELK SEASONS

PIERRE, S.D. – The South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks (GFP) Commission proposed minor changes to the number of elk licenses available in the 2020 and 2021 hunting seasons. The intent of the changes is to allow an opportunity for adjustments to be made at finalization based on the results of the upcoming Black Hills aerial survey to maximize hunter opportunity and meet population objectives identified in the elk management plan.

GFP COMMISSION PROPOSES TO REMOVE WATER SAFETY ZONE ON LAKE NORDEN AND MINA LAKE

PIERRE, S.D. – The South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks (GFP) Commission proposed to remove a water safety zone on Lake Norden in Hamlin County and Mina Lake in Edmunds County.

GFP COMMISSION TO CONSIDER FLATHEAD CATFISH LENGTH LIMIT RESTRICTION

PIERRE, S.D. – The South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks (GFP) Commission has proposed to establish a length limit on flathead catfish. A final determination whether to move forward with the proposed change will occur at their March meeting.

GFP Commission to Hear Public Comment on Proposed Nest Predator Bounty Program for 2020

PIERRE, S.D. – At their January meeting, the South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks (GFP) Commission was provided a comprehensive summary on a survey conducted around the 2019 Nest Predator Bounty Program. The independent survey was conducted by Responsive Management and revealed that 83% of the general public supported the operation of the Nest Predator Bounty Program.

BIGHORN SHEEP SEASON WILL HAVE INCREASED OPPORTUNITIES

PIERRE, S.D. – The South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks (GFP) Commission voted to allow up to a total of eight bighorn sheep licenses for the 2020 season. Of the eight licenses, one will be an auction license and the revenue specifically used for bighorn sheep management.

COMMISSION MODIFIES RULES RELATED TO CHRONIC WASTING DISEASE

PIERRE, S.D. – The South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks (GFP) Commission modified how deer and elk hunting units are classified as a chronic wasting disease (CWD) endemic area. Results from surveillance efforts have detected CWD in eight new counties this past fall.

GFP COMMISSION CHANGES FLATHEAD CATFISH LENGTH LIMIT RESTRICTION

PIERRE, S.D. – The South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks (GFP) Commission has established a length limit on flathead catfish. The new rule limits the harvest of flathead catfish 30 inches or longer to one per day on inland waters, as part of the catfish daily limit. The original proposal was made at the November commission meeting and included all waters in the state, including border waters, and originated from the public petition process.

The petitioner cited declining quality of smallmouth in Lake Sharpe due to angler harvest. 

GFP Commission Tables Items for Later Review

PIERRE, S.D. – At their April meeting, the commission tabled some agenda items for later review. In following CDC recommendations regarding COVID-19, the commission meeting was held via teleconference. While constituents were able to join the call to provide testimony during the public hearing and open forum, the commission opted to take extra care to ensure adequate opportunities for public input.

GFP Commission Establishes Fees for Nonresident Landowner Deer and Antelope Licenses

PIERRE, S.D. – During the 2020 South Dakota Legislative Session, the legislature created a provision to allow for nonresident landowners to be eligible for west river deer and firearm antelope licenses for their own land. In response to this action, the Game, Fish and Parks (GFP) Commission finalized fees for these licenses at their July meeting.
