State Park Events

State Park: Custer State Park

Location: Peter Norbeck Outdoor Ed Center

Celebrate Spring with Custer State Park by helping birds! Build a bluebird nesting box to take home, learn about the types of birds that may use it, and take a look at the boxes already in the park. Meet at the Peter Norbeck Outdoor Education Center. Participants will need to bring a hammer and take the nest box home. All other supplies will be provided. One box per family/group. Registration required due to supplies.

This program allows participants to build bluebird houses, learn about the mountain and eastern bluebird, and the benefits the boxes have to these unique birds. This program allows participants to learn about the mountain bluebird and other types of bird and their bird boxes, the benefits of providing a nesting box, the birds that could potentially use the box, and the box location for successful nesting.

Following the presentation, participants will construct a bird box. Participants will construct one birdhouse during this program and take their completed birdhouse home. We will meet at the Peter Norbeck Outdoor Education Center and visit a few of the current bluebird boxes that Custer State Park has and check to see if any birds are nesting in them. All supplies will be provided.
