Characteristics

  • State Endangered
  • Small, slender yellowish-brown body with silvery white belly
  • Small eyes
  • Long sickle shaped pectoral fins
  • Conspicuous barbels at the corners of their mouth
  • Diet: Little is known about the feeding habitats, however they are believed to feed on organisms dwelling within substrates
  • Habitat: Prefer the main channels of large, turbid rivers with strong currents and sand or fine gravel substrates
  • Distribution: Central South Dakota, within the Missouri River, mainly below Gavin’s Point Dam
