Identification:

New Zealand Mud Snails grow to about 5mm in length and have brown or black cone-shaped shells that twirl to a point.

Impacts:

These snails can reproduce quickly and reach extremely high densities. They alter the foodweb by consuming algae and plankton.

Range Expansion:

New Zealand mudsnails can be spread by all water users. They often attach to felt soled waders and fly fishing equipment.

South Dakota Distribution:

New Zealand mudsnails have not been found in South Dakota.
