Frequently Asked Questions for Garmin Units

Step-by-step Instructions:

  1. From the gps mapping page select Garmin Units under the GPS mapfile heading.
  2. You will then enter an email address.  This email address will be used to notify you if and when there are any changes or updates to the map files. Click Continue.
  3. This page will provide you with two versions of the public hunting areas based on your gps's ability to upload maps.  Each gps unit will have different memory capabilities.  Some will have 8 mb of memory, some will have 20 or more.  The public map without roads is approximately 4mb so it should work on most units. 
  4. Click on the file you wish to download, and click save.   Preferably you will create a new folder for the map file.  This will allow you to easily find the data.  Click the save button to complete the download process.
  5. Once downloaded, hit the close button.
  6. Now you will have to download the program to uploads the basemaps to your GPS.
  7. Click on "click to upload file to garmin gps link"
  8. Click the save button and click save again to save this file to the same location as your map file.
  9. Once that download is complete, hit close.
  10. You will now connect you gps unit to your computer with a usb or serial cable.
  11. Navigate to the folder where you saved the map file on your computer.
  12. Double click the "gpswithroads.zip" or "gpswithoutroads.zip" to extract files the base map file.
  13. From the extract compressed zipped dialogue box select "extract"  make sure "that show extracted files when complete "prompt box is checked.

    *You will need to know where this folder is for the next few steps.
  14. Navigate to the folder where you saved the map file on your computer.
  15. Double click the "map upload.zip" file.
  16. From the extract compressed zipped dialogue box select "extract"  make sure "that show extracted files when complete "prompt box is checked.
  17. Once the files are extracted, double click the "mapupload.exe" file.  The computer may ask permission to run the software.  Go ahead and click run.
  18. This will open the program for you to upload the map to your gps.  The lefthand side of the program box will display the model of gps you own and the memory available on your unit.
  19. Click the blue area on the img map files table.  Navigate to the folder where you extracted the map file.  Click the map file and select open.  Then click "upload to gps". *If you have other base maps loaded on to your GPS unit, check the "add to the existing maps" check box.
  20. Once the process is complete, you can click on the exit button to finish the upload.
  21. Disconnect the gps from your computer.
  22. Turn your gps unit on and navigate to your map function.
  23. Zoom to an area where you know there is public land.  The map data is scale dependent and will display when your scale reads 0.5 or 0.3 miles.  If you have a color gps, the maps for the public areas will be color coded to match the South Dakota Game Fish and Parks annual Public Hunting Atlas.
