Latest Chronic Wasting Disease Testing REsults

In the South Dakota CWD Surveillance period of July 1, 2016 to June 30, 2017, a total of 522 samples have been collected for CWD surveillance.

Additionally, 34 positive elk were found during the Wind Cave Elk reduction program from November 2016 through early March 2017in which 262 elk were removed.

In Summary:
South Dakota is reporting a total of 21 positive deer and elk (0 mule deer, 5 white-tailed deer and 16 elk) in the testing period of July 1, 2016 to June 30, 2017.  (Not including the 34 positive elk from Wind Cave National Park)

To date, South Dakota has found 326 cases of CWD (191 deer and 135 elk) in free ranging deer and elk since testing began in 1997. Wind Cave National Park (WICA) accounts for 94 of these animals (84 elk, 10 deer). Eighteen elk and 1 deer have been found in Custer State Park. A total of 26,056 wild deer and elk have been tested for CWD since 1997.
