  • State Threatened
  • Small, dark or dusky colored fish with a silver or white colored underside
  • Usually with a dark spot near the base of the tail
  • Single lateral band
  • Breeding males have red sides below the lateral band
  • Diet: Aquatic insects, zooplankton and algae
  • Habitat: Prefer cool, bogs, ponds, lakes and small clear streams
  • Distribution: Southern South Dakota, within the Little White, White, and Keya Paha River drainages in the Sandhills area of South Dakota
