Welcome to Harvest South Dakota! Thank you for your interest in these classes!

Harvest South Dakota is a comprehensive 5-class outdoor education series for novice hunters and anglers with an emphasis on ethics, stewardship, community, and quality local food. These classes provide students with the skills to hunt, process, and cook wild game.

Here is a run down regarding who these classes are for and what is needed for registration:

  • Novice hunters and anglers of 18+ years of age.
  • Students who are dedicated to attending all course work established during registration.
  • Students will be asked to purchase their own hunting licenses for participation in supported hunts.
  • All students will have to pass a preliminary background check in order to handle firearms.

Class 1: Classroom Session

Ethics, sustainability, hunting methods and tactics
Time: 6 - 9 p.m.
Location: Izaak Walton Leage.1200 Izaak Walton Rd, Pierre, SD 57501

Class 2: Field Session

Scouting, Habitat, Survival
Time: 9 a.m. - 12 p.m.

Notes: Dress warmly, we’ll be outside the majority of the morning

Class 3: Classroom Session

Firearms and Law
Time: 6 - 9 p.m.
Location: Oahe Downstream Lodge

Class 4: Classroom Session

Field dressing and butchering
Time: 6 - 9 p.m.
Location: GFP Fisheries Office. 20641 SD Hwy 1806. Ft. Pierre SD 57532. Fisheries shop

Notes: Wear clothes that can get dirty!

Class 5: Field Session

Firearm handling and live fire
Time: 9 a.m. - 1 p.m.
Location: Oahe Downstream Lodge/Oahe Downstream Shooting Range
Instructor: Hilary Meyer, Mike Greiner, Josh Carr, Taniya Bethke
Notes: We will provide firearms, ammo, and hearing and eye protection. Dress warmly, we will be outside the majority of the morning.

Supported hunts will be scheduled following completion of all five classes.
