Fisher Grove State Park offers a blend of historical significance and recreational activities. Named after Frank I. Fisher, the first permanent European settler in Spink County, the park encompasses a historic river crossing once used by Native Americans and later by the Watertown-to-Pierre stage line at Belchers Ford.
\r\n\r\nVisitors can enjoy camping with 22 electrical sites, picnicking, fishing, and access to the James River for canoeing and kayaking. Spanning 1,500 acres along the Missouri River, this area was donated to the people of South Dakota in 1984 by Mary and Maud Adams, granddaughters of original homesteader Stephen Searls Adams. They envisioned the area as a place where people, particularly youth, could enjoy the land and learn more about the natural world surrounding them. Mary and Maud wanted to give others a "place for inner renewal."
\r\n\r\nAdams Homestead and Nature Preserve features close to 10 miles of limestone trails that wind through prairie, forest and along the riverbank. With over 100 species of birds, a variety of native plants and a number of different animals, visitors are immersed in nature.
\r\n\r\nRestored historical buildings include: Lamont Country School, Sha/Adams House, Stavenger Lutheran Church and Brusseau Cabin. Tours of the buildings are available through reservation.

\r\n\r\nIts strong fishery is well known for its walleye, smallmouth bass, crappie, and also supports northern pike, largemouth bass, perch and bluegill.
\r\n\r\nAngostura is one of the few large reservoirs in western South Dakota. The dam was built in 1949 by the Bureau of Reclamation across the Cheyenne River for irrigation purposes.
\r\n\r\nThe average depth of this reservoir is 29 feet and the deepest portion of the pool is 75 feet deep when full. The lake's average summer temperature is 66 degrees F.

\r\n\r\nMato Paha or "Bear Mountain" is the Lakota name given to this site. To the Cheyenne, it is "Noahvose." This geological formation is one of several intrusions of igneous rock in the Black Hills that formed millions of years ago. The mountain is sacred to many American Indian tribes who come here to hold religious ceremonies. Please be respectful of worshippers and their religious practices.
\r\n\r\nMany American Indians see Bear Butte as a place where the creator has chosen to communicate with them through visions and prayer.
\r\n\r\nDuring your visit, you will see colorful pieces of cloth and small bundles or pouches hanging from the trees. These prayer cloths and tobacco ties represent the prayers offered by individuals during their worship. Please respect these offerings and leave them undisturbed.
\r\n\r\nThere is a herd of buffalo at Bear Butte, but unlike Custer State Park, Bear Butte is not a “drive through” park.

Developed to increase environmental awareness in visitors, Beaver Creek Nature Area highlights natural and historical resources in the vicinity. Pioneers named the creek for the numerous beaver they found along the winding spring-fed stream. The stream flows year-round, supplying the numerous plants and animals with water, and in turn, supplying visitors with opportunities to observe nature up-close.
\r\n\r\nEvery year, the park hosts the Homesteader Day Harvest Festival on the Sunday after Labor Day. The event attracts visitors of all ages who want a taste of homestead life and living history. The free event typically features fiddlers, pioneer crafts, living history and old-time farming demonstrations.

An 1823 expedition led by Major Stephan Long and geologist William Keating explored the Big Stone Lake region. Shortly after entering present-day South Dakota, they met an American Indian village on a rocky island (Big Island). This island is now the 100-acre nature area that is a natural refuge for a variety of wildlife, including songbirds, waterfowl and shore birds.
\r\n\r\nDuring the 1800s and early-1900s, resort hotels dotted the shore and excursion boats frequented the island's brothel. In an attempt to close the facility, irate women reportedly burned and sank a boat. In the 1940s, military aircraft practiced landing and take-off from a short runway on the island in preparation for war in the Pacific. Today, the area is accessible only by boat.

Shannon, the youngest member of the expedition at 19 years old, became lost when he was sent to fetch strayed horses. Thinking the crew had moved up river, Shannon raced to meet the boats. When he was found exhausted and starving two weeks later, he quickly learned that the expedition had been downstream from him the entire time.

With its 146 campsites and ten camping cabins, Chief White Crane is a great place for groups to gather to spend the weekend. Combined with its own facilities and the features of the other two state parks nearby, Lewis & Clark and Pierson Ranch, visitors can take advantage of a wide variety of recreation opportunities.
\r\n\r\nChief White Crane is one of the South Dakota state parks that offers the opportunity for visitors to see the majestic bald eagle.
\r\n\r\nIn South Dakota, many bald eagles spend their winters below the Missouri River dams where they are able to catch fish and prey on waterfowl attracted to the open water.
\r\n\r\nThey typically perch within 50 feet of the riverbank in tall cottonwood trees. The birds usually feed in the morning and rest in their roosting trees in the afternoon.
\r\n\r\nBald eagles will abandon their roosts if disturbed by humans. For this reason, the Department of Game, Fish and Parks prohibits motorized traffic in state recreation areas with winter bald eagle roosts. Walkers and cross-country skiers are allowed in these areas but must refrain from disturbing roosting bald eagles.

Water-lovers enjoy fishing, boating, or just watching the waves at Cow Creek. Both primitive shoreline camping and campground camping are available. \r\n\r\nFeeding and disturbing park wildlife is against park regulations. While the animals within the park are used to visitors and vehicles, they are still wild animals. Please remain in your vehicle or stay at least 100 yards from bison, elk, and other animals.
\r\n\r\nPets must be on a leash no longer than 10 feet and are not allowed in any park buildings or on designated swim beaches. Please clean up after your pet and do not leave it unattended. Service animals are welcome.

Named after the nearby Sisseton Tribe, this historic fort is now a picturesque state park that unfolds the area's past. Walk the grounds where the officers' quarters, stone barracks, powder magazine, guard house, and other buildings that remain from the time of the western frontier.
\r\n\r\nThis 1864 fort, atop the Coteau des Prairies (or hills of the prairies), was originally a frontier army outpost called Fort Wadsworth. The site was chosen because it provided a strong natural defense, an ample supply of lime and clay for making bricks, an abundance of lake water for drinking and a thick stand of trees for timber and fuel.
\r\n\r\nThe Visitor Center is open daily from Open House weekend through Labor Day, and then hours switch to winter hours which are Monday-Friday 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Guided tours are available from Open House weekend to Labor Day at 10:30 a.m., 1:30 p.m., and 4:00 p.m. daily. Outside of those times, customizable and guided tours can be scheduled by calling the main office at 605.910.4465.

Imagine a path where the ghosts of Wild Bill Hickok and Calamity Jane still roam; where bicyclists, hikers, and horseback riders can explore spruce and ponderosa pine forests; and the very young, the very old, and people of all abilities can enjoy.
\r\n\r\nThe George S. Mickelson Trail, in the heart of the beautiful Black Hills, was completed in September of 1998. Its gentle slopes and easy access allow people of all ages and abilities to enjoy the beauty of the Black Hills. Much of the trail passes through National Forest Land, but there are parts of the trail that pass through privately owned land, where the trail use is restricted to the trail only.
\r\n\r\nThe trail is 109 miles long and contains more than 100 converted railroad bridges and 4 rock tunnels. The trail surface is crushed limestone. There are 14 trailheads, all of which offer parking, self-sale trail pass stations, vault toilets, and tables.
\r\n\r\nA majority of the trail does not exceed a 4% grade, but parts of the trail are considered strenuous. Dumont is the highest point and the 19 mile stretch from Deadwood to Dumont is the longest incline.
\r\n\r\nNote: Poor-to-nonexistent cell phone coverage on the trail. Water is not available along the trail.

Good Earth State Park southeast of Sioux Falls is an important cultural and historical site as well as a unique nature retreat adjacent to the most developed and populated part of our state. The site itself is one of the oldest sites of long-term human habitation in the United States. The river, abundant wildlife, fertile flood plains, availability of pipestone (catlinite), and protection from winds made the area an important gathering place for seasonal ceremonies and a significant trading center for many tribal peoples from 1300-1700 A.D.
\r\n\r\nDuring this time, occupants were primarily Oneota Tradition Peoples, including Omaha, Ponca, Ioway, and Otoe, but many other tribes were attracted and participated in trading agricultural product as well as hides, pelts, and pipestone (catlinite).
\r\n\r\nThis is the largest Oneota cultural site discovered to date in the upper Midwest. There are two other significant Oneota cultural sites located respectively in southwest Iowa and central Missouri.

Big Stone Lake provides the setting for Hartford Beach State Park, a popular camping and picnic area nestled in the shade of a native wooded forest. Runoff from melting glaciers 10,000 years ago created the River Warren, a section of which is known today as Big Stone Lake. Rugged rock-strewn bluffs and scenic timbered shorelines surround Hartford Beach. Five hiking trails at Hartford Beach State Park take visitors past historic sites and scenic overlooks, including burial mounds and a prehistoric village site. The American Indian mounds found in Hartford Beach State Park are typical of numerous such mounds in eastern South Dakota. They cover a time span from approximately 300 A.D. to 1600 A.D. At the eastern end of the Robar Trail is a log cabin trading post which operated from 1863 to 1873.
\r\n\r\nHartford Beach State Park offers a wide variety of amenities that includes campgrounds, a boat ramp, swimming and boater’s beaches, fish cleaning station, fishing pole and yard game checkouts, playgrounds, and a picnic shelter. Hartford Beach State Park offers a nine-hole disc golf course on top of a knoll surrounded by the areas wooded draws overlooking Big Stone Lake. A five-target archery range will help get bows dialed in before embarking on the 28-target archery trail winding through some of Hartford Beach’s grasslands and woody savannahs. Don’t forget to try fishing on the world class Big Stone Lake. The lake is known for its exceptional perch fishing as well as large numbers of bluegills, crappies, walleyes, largemouth bass, and northern pike. The park’s four camping cabins are open year-round to enjoy all seasons and the views. The one-room cabins come with heat, air conditioning, electricity and sleeping accommodations for four people. The rolling hills and beautiful river views make Indian Creek an excellent place to camp, picnic and explore. Park visitors will find new adventure in this rugged land explored by Lewis and Clark in 1804. During the late 1800s and early 1900s, cowboys used the area to fatten thousands of cattle for shipment south.
\r\n\r\nIndian Creek Recreation Area offers over 2.5 miles of hiking and biking trails. Along any of the three trails, a person can spot a variety of wildlife, from deer, raccoons, beavers, and bull snakes to turkeys, pheasants and orchard orioles.

The island is covered in trees and meadows, which are home to a variety of wildlife and bird species.
\r\n\r\nThe island was recorded in the Lewis and Clark journals when they passed through the area in 1804. They saw many elk and buffalo on the island and called it "Good Humored Island" in reflection of their good spirits that day. In contrast, further up the river the next day they had a tense encounter with the Teton Sioux. The group's campsite location that night was fittingly referred to as "Bad Humored Island," which is no longer there today. The island's current name is attributed to Joseph LaFramboise. He built Fort LaFramboise at the mouth of the Bad River (west of the island). In later years, parts of the island were farmed.
\r\n\r\nAs upstream dams changed the water flow in the Missouri River in the mid-1960s, the tree habitat on this sand bar island has changed to include species such as cedar, ash and Russian olive. Native cottonwood trees are also part of the island landscape, and once flourished due to the once natural flooding of the river.

This 59 acre park is best known for its beach facilities and excellent fishing. Its proximity to Sioux Falls and Newton Hills State Park make it a great place to enjoy a day on the beach.
\r\n\r\nThe focus of Lake Alvin Recreation Area is water recreation. The park has become a popular gathering place for swimmers, boaters and anglers.
\r\n\r\nAnglers can expect to catch walleye, northern pike, crappie, sunfish, perch, catfish and bullheads. The 105 acre lake is the perfect size for any boat and motor; however, the lake is designated as a no-wake zone to protect the shoreline from erosion. At no time can any boat exceed 5 mph or produce a visible wake.
\r\n\r\nLake Alvin is an artificial impoundment formed by the construction of a dam across the lower end of Nine Mile Creek. It was named for Alvin Dempewolf, the only World War soldier form Harrisburg who died overseas. The construction of the dam was completed in August 1954 and the lake completely filled in 1957. The concrete spillway for the dam was completely replaced in 1994.

Nestled along the shores of Lake Carthage, this charming yet well-equipped park offers everything you need for a relaxing outdoor escape. The park features 13 electrical campsites and multiple primitive tent sites, a boat ramp and boat beach for easy lake access, and scenic lakeside campsites with picturesque views of the 1,300-acre lake.
\r\n\r\nJust a short distance away in the town of Carthage, campers have access to a dump station and a shower house for added convenience. Whether you're casting a line from shore or venturing onto the water, Lake Carthage Park is a favorite spot for anglers and outdoor enthusiasts alike.

This state park is a little hidden gem on the Minnesota border. Nestled between Lake Cochrane and Lake Oliver, ample fishing, boating, swimming, and hiking opportunities await your family camping weekend! Reservations may be made online for our spacious electric campsites or log camping cabin. Bring family or friends to enjoy the scenery of Lake Cochrane Recreation Area while settling into the cabin. Four can sleep comfortably in the set of bunk beds and double bed. Inside is a table and benches; outside, a porch, picnic table and fire grate.
\r\n\r\nLargemouth bass are ample in both of these lakes for your fishing adventures. Lake Cochrane also boasts excellent populations of walleyes, bluegills, perch, crappies, and northern pike. Fishing piers and boat ramps on both lakes make access a breeze. There are also a number of public hunting areas in Deuel County that provide access to South Dakota’s world class pheasant, waterfowl, and deer hunting.

Nestled on a scenic peninsula, Lake Herman State Park offers a perfect blend of outdoor adventure and relaxation. The park features a fully equipped campground with 72 campsites (including electrical sites), 4 cabins, and modern shower facilities. Visitors can enjoy a range of activities, including hiking trails through native oak woodlands and prairie grasses, disc golfing on a course for all skill levels, a horseshoe pits for classic outdoor fun, picnic shelters for gatherings and events, and of course boating, fishing, and cross-country skiing.
\r\n\r\nLake Herman was formed thousands of years ago by melting glacial ice and has long been a popular gathering place. Before European settlers arrived, Native American tribes frequently camped here while traveling to the nearby Pipestone quarries.
\r\n\r\nIn 1870, Herman Luce and his son, William, became the first European settlers in the area, claiming land on the lake’s eastern shore. The following year, they built a log cabin from hand-hewn oak logs, which still stands today. The cabin briefly served as a U.S. Land Office, with Herman Luce in charge. Recognized for its historical significance, the Herman Luce Cabin was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1977.

Melting glaciers carved the valley of Hiddenwood Creek. Traditionally, this area was home for several American Indian tribes. Early explorers crossed this area on their way between Big Stone Lake and the Rocky Mountains. The first European settlers named the area because no trees were visible on the vast prairie until they reached the crest of the hills overlooking the valley. In 1927, the Department of Game and Fish used a new technique called an earthen dam to make Lake Hiddenwood, one of the first artificial lakes in South Dakota. The park was closed in May of 2018 after a flood washed out the dam and the park entrance. In summer of 2022 the park entrance road was redone. The 1927 dam has not been rebuilt. The park is great for hiking, picnics, and basic camping.

One of the largest lakes in the state, Lake Poinsett was named after Joel Poinsett who served as U.S. Secretary of War. He was instrumental in promoting the expedition of Joseph Nicollet and John Fremont who first explored the region in 1838. The party camped on the north side of Lake Poinsett. Today, the lakeshore still provides excellent camping opportunities, as well as many other recreational activities.
\r\n\r\nThe Lake Poinsett Visitor Center and Museum is a fascinating place to learn about the history of the area. The Museum is home to a variety of artifacts that came from the collection of Harlan Olson and were donated to South Dakota Game, Fish & Parks by his family. The exhibits will take you back in time from prehistoric days to the late 1990s.

Originally called Dry Woods Lake by American Indians, the lake was renamed for Jacob Thompson, Secretary of the Interior under President James Buchanan. In the 1930s, the lake was completely dry and used for pasture. In the 1980s, the area was a 9,000-acre marsh. Heavy rains and snowmelt in the mid-80s filled the lake to over 20 feet deep. The lake is so distinct it was designated as a National Natural Landmark.
\r\n\r\nLaura Ingalls Wilder called the area around DeSmet her home. Lake Thompson itself is also mentioned as one of the Twin Lakes in her books, including By the Shores of Silver Lake and The Long Winter.

Known for its clear waters and abundant fish, Lake Vermillion Recreation Area is a popular area among fishermen, boaters and swimmers. During the fall, sportsmen can find waterfowl and upland game within minutes from the park. This 512-acre reservoir is located 27 miles west of Sioux Falls.
\r\n\r\nLake Vermillion was created by impounding waters from the east fork of the Vermillion River in 1958. The river itself was first noted on an 1801 map by a French trapper who called it Otter Stream.
\r\n
\r\nThe word vermillion means vivid red color. Some say the stream got its name from the outcropping of red quartzite along its bank.

Originally Big Owl and Little Owl rivers, the sheltered watersheds of the Moreau and Little Moreau Rivers provided traditional winter campgrounds for the Cheyenne, and later the Minneconjou and Two Kettle bands of Teton Sioux. The river names were later changed from Owl to an early trader's name of Moreau. Grassland attracted the first European settlers to the Moreau Valley. During the late 1870s through 1890s, cattle barons from southern states grazed thousands of cattle on this rich grassland.
\r\n\r\nThis prairie oasis is home to an abundance of animals and plants. Be on the lookout for red foxes, bobcats and coyotes. Bird species include wild turkeys, sharptail grouse, gray partridge, pheasants, and snowy and great-horned owls. In the winter, bald and golden eagles are often spotted.

Nearby Shadehill Recreation Area offers recreational opportunities as well as points of historical interest to keep you busy all day. Or, if you prefer peace and quiet, this is a great campground to just sit back and relax.
\r\n\r\nMany historic figures have crossed through the area, including Hugh Glass and Custer's 1874 Expedition. In 1823, Glass was attacked by a grizzly bear in this area, which is documented in the novel Lord Grizzly.

\r\n\r\nNewton Hills State Park was named after William Newton who settled in the area in the 1850s. Newton's wife was a mid-wife; until the 1870s, she was the only European American north of Vermillion who could deliver babies and cure the sick.
\r\n\r\nGlaciers created this narrow strip of rolling hills and forest that is part of the geological formation called the Coteau des Prairie, which extends along the eastern boundary of South Dakota. At its highest point, the Coteau rises to more than 2,000 feet above sea level. Artifacts and burial mounds found near the park indicate that a Woodland Indian Culture inhabited this region between 300 B.C. and 900 A.D. The area's unique dark forest, amidst a vast open prairie, has prompted many recent legends, including buried gold, robbers' hideouts and horse thieves.
\r\n\r\nOver 200 species of birds visit the area each year. White-tailed deer, wild turkeys, marmots, rabbits, red and gray fox and squirrels are also found within the park. Between October 1 and April 30 each year, bow hunting is allowed in the park. Hunters will not be using the high traffic areas located near the hiking trails. Uncased bows and firearms are not allowed within the campground and picnic areas.

Sioux River Folk Festival
\r\n\r\nNewton Hills hosts numerous folk music concerts in conjunction with the Friends of Traditional Music. One of the most popular concerts, the Sioux River Folk Festival, is a 3-day event held annually on the first full weekend in August. \r\n\r\nFestiFall/CandleLight Walk
\r\n\r\nThe popular FestiFall event is held annually on the first Saturday in October from 1 - 5 p.m. It features many family activities including arts and crafts, kids' games, hay rides and bluegrass music. The pumpkin takes center stage with pumpkin catapulting, pumpkin carving demonstrations and decorated pumpkin contests.
\r\n\r\nFollowing the FestiFall event, the Candlelight Walk will lead visitors along 2.2 miles of candle-lit trail through the deep woods of Newton Hills. The trail will be solely lit by candles and carved pumpkins.
\r\n\r\nNature & Recreational Programs
\r\n\r\nNewton Hills hosts many activities during the summer season. Each program is geared for families with young children and will expose participants to the natural and cultural features of the park.
\r\n\r\nPrograms are held every Saturday between 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. Educational films are presented Friday and Saturday evenings at 8:30 p.m. The park hosts a non-denominational church service Sunday at 9 a.m. See events calendar.

Lewis and Clark came up the river in late-August, early-September in 1804. In this area, they saw their first prairie dogs, which they called "barking squirrels." They were also told to watch for an infrequent phenomenon called "burning bluffs," where the shale ignites and smokes.

The park's three campgrounds give visitors a variety of recreational opportunities, from boating to hiking to disc golf. The Corps of Engineers began building the Oahe Dam in 1948 and in 1962 started generating electricity. It's one of the largest constructed reservoirs in the United States, measuring 231 miles connecting the capital cities of South Dakota and North Dakota.
\r\n\r\nOahe Downstream is one of the South Dakota state parks that offers the opportunity for visitors to see the majestic bald eagle. During winter, bird watchers can view eagles that roost in the treetops below the dam. They typically can be viewed perching within 50 feet of the riverbank in tall cottonwood trees.
\r\n\r\nEveryone is encouraged to visit the interactive South Dakota prairie butterfly garden located near the main entrance at Oahe Downstream. Find 17 species of native prairie plants, identify some of common butterflies, and learn something new about butterflies of South Dakota.

Nestled among eight connecting glacial lakes, this park provides a never-ending variety of activities throughout the year, from hiking and swimming, to ice fishing and cross-country skiing. Shaded campgrounds and picnic areas complement the park's excellent swimming and boating facilities.
\r\n\r\nThe park was once used as a summer camp and an annual gathering spot for American Indians. Later, Samuel Mortimer arrived in 1869 and built the log cabin that still stands at the park.

\r\n\r\nLake Oahe Reservoir, located on the Missouri River, provides hours of outdoor fun. The lake has more than 2,000 miles of shoreline and its clear waters are ideal for boating, sailing, fishing, water skiing and diving. Campers, history buffs, mountain bikers and hikers will find new adventures in this rugged land from explored by Lewis and Clark.

Palisades State Park is one of the most unique areas in South Dakota. Split Rock Creek, which flows through the park, is lined with Sioux quartzite formations varying from shelves several feet above the water to 50-foot vertical cliffs. Scenic overlooks and rushing water make Palisades a popular getaway. The park is popular among campers, photographers, sightseers, picnickers, rock climbers and hikers.
\r\n\r\nA huge flour mill was once located on the bluff overlooking the park. The mill was powered by a large water-wheel installed along the rushing Split Rock Creek. The once-bustling town of Palisades grew up around the success of the mill. In 1886, silver was discovered downstream. The silver ore proved to be low in quality, however, and the nearly 300 claims were quickly dropped.
\r\n\r\nFor millions of years, Split Rock Creek cut deep gorges through Palisades State Park. Geologists estimate the Sioux quartzite spires are 1.2 billion years old. Four hiking trails twist and turn through these beautiful Sioux quartzite formations. The cliffs and formations at Palisades are used by rock climbers to practice their scaling and rappelling techniques. Bolting is not allowed on the quartzite formations. \r\n\r\nIn 2019, Game, Fish and Parks (GFP) along with South Dakota Parks and Wildlife Foundation (SDPWF) secured land purchase agreements that will provide for park expansion and additional recreational opportunities. Governor Noem’s 2019 legislative budget included $500,000 towards the project, in addition to SDPWF raising over $1,000,000 to match Governor Noem's and GFP’s commitment to the expansion. The park will grow from 167 acres to 435 acres; with the new property following Split Rock Creek to the South.
\r\n\r\nTo date GFP has installed the primary road system, camping pads with a gravel base, and several acres of habitat and woody vegetation. In 2024 the park opened the new entrance. With this, guests are able to enjoy a new welcome center for better customer service experience, 77 new campsites, a new dump station, 4 additional camping cabins, and new day use area. The day use provides several additional resources from fish and kayaking to shelters and picnics. More trails have also been established connecting the original park to the expansion area. Possible future development includes more trails, Archery Range, Disc Golf and more! Two log camping cabins are nestled just off the campground on the shores of Pelican Lake. The beautiful views from the cabin decks provide a quiet place to enjoy breakfast or an evening campfire on the lakefront. This also provides an easy fishing or swimming hotspot just feet from the cabin decks. There are 83 spacious campsites at this family oriented campground that are all updated to include 50 amp electric service along with an updated camper fill and dump station as you come into the park. Two comfort stations with showers and flush toilets provide visitors with clean accommodations during their stays. Campground hosts are available in the park to answer questions or provide assistance should the need arise.
\r\n\r\nPelican Lake Recreation Area is an outdoor enthusiast's dream! This state park boasts 5.5 miles of trails for those looking to hike through open prairie, woodlands, and luscious wildflower plantings all while enjoying the area birds, wildlife, and views of the lake. 4.5 miles of our trails are multi-use and allow horseback riding. There is also an archery range and 14 target course for those wishing to hone their skills for upcoming hunting seasons or have some friendly competition with their fellow shooters. Outdoor education programs, a kayak launch with kayak rentals, beach, boat ramp, fishing pier, playgrounds, and a picnic shelter also add to the opportunities that await you at Pelican Lake.

Noted for its cool, spring-fed waters, Pickerel Lake is one of the deepest natural lakes in the state. The 955-acre lake bears an American Indian name meaning "where you spear long fish." Excursion boats were common until the early 1900s. A fish hatchery was built in 1929 and abandoned in 1979, when a new facility was built at Blue Dog Lake.

Pierson Ranch opened in 1959 and is the oldest campground in the area. It was the first campground to be constructed after Gavins Point Dam was completed. Located between Chief White Crane and Lewis and Clark Recreation Areas, visitors can take advantage of a wide variety of recreation opportunities in all three parks.
\r\n\r\nRight off Highway 52, the park provides easy access to picnic shelters and campsites. In addition, the large day-use area serves as an excellent facility for hosting family reunions and large group picnics.

Fishing and water recreation draws a quieter crowd to Platte Creek Recreation Area to enjoy Lake Francis Case on the Missouri River. Visitors to Platte Creek enjoy natural features similar to those at Snake Creek, but from a quieter campground with similar amenities.
\r\n\r\nThe earliest maps refer to this stream as Fish Creek. After the 1880s, the creek was renamed to honor Bernard Pratte, who operated a fur post near the mouth of the creek. A spelling error forever changed the name to Platte Creek. It was in this area, also, that Lewis and Clark were told to watch for the "burning bluffs."

Randall Creek Recreation Area is located on the banks of the Missouri River, downstream from Fort Randall Dam. Spend hours peacefully watching the water flow, observing the animals and birds that frequent the area, and enjoying he breathtaking beauty of the surrounding shoreline.
\r\n\r\nThe US Army Corps of Engineers began building the dam in 1946 and started generating electricity in 1954.
\r\n\r\nRandall Creek is one of the South Dakota state parks that offers the opportunity for visitors to see the majestic bald eagle. The eagle roost area in the park is a designated National Natural Landmark.
\r\n\r\n
\r\nIn South Dakota, many bald eagles spend their winters below the Missouri River dams where they are able to catch fish and prey on waterfowl attracted to the open water.
\r\nThey typically perch within 50 feet of the riverbank in tall cottonwood trees. The birds usually feed in the morning and rest in their roosting trees in the afternoon.
\r\nBald eagles will abandon their roosts if disturbed by humans. For this reason, the Department of Game, Fish and Parks prohibits motorized traffic in state recreation areas with winter bald eagle roosts. Walkers and cross-country skiers are allowed in these areas but must refrain from disturbing roosting bald eagles.

Revheim Bay Recreation Area is a day-use park with an archery range, four picnic shelters, a playground, an off-highway vehicle area, two sets of horseshoe pits, and a sand volleyball court. The picnic shelters range in size from large groups to small families. The park is a great place to hold a family reunion, company picnic, or to spend a relaxing day.

Rocky Point Recreation Area is located on the 8,000-acre Belle Fourche Reservoir. The reservoir was created in 1911, when Orman Dam was constructed to store water for agricultural use. At the time of its completion, Orman Dam was the largest earthen dam in the world. In 1989, Orman Dam was designated a National Historic Civil Engineering Landmark.

\r\n\r\nThe earliest known inhabitants of Roy Lake were members of the Woodland Culture, who built large burial mounds. Artifacts dating between 900 and 1300 A.D. have been found near the park. The Roy (or Roi) family is credited with building the area's first white settlement. Local American Indians called the crops planted along the lakeshore the "Roy Planting" and the name persisted.

Sandy Shore was named for its pristine sand beaches along the shorelines of the clean, clear watered Lake Kampeska. Two shorefront camping cabins are perfect for your summer family vacation or a fall outdoors getaway. A sand beach is inches from their decks that provide the easiest swimming access in the state. Each cabin also has a dock out front to utilize during your stay and a fire pit on the shoreline for viewing the evening sunset. 15 modern electric campsites across the parking lot from the lakeshore all provide excellent places for a summer or fall family camping adventure with prime access to the infamous beaches.
\r\n\r\nLake Kampeska is host to a mixed bag of walleye, northern pike, smallmouth bass, perch, and crappies for your spring, summer, or fall fishing adventures. Numerous other quality fishing and waterfowl hunting lakes are within a short drive making Sandy Shore the perfect outdoor adventure hub. The lake is also a hotspot for water-based recreation such as kayaking, tubing, water skiing, wakeboarding, and jet skiing. Sandy Shore has the largest boat ramp on Lake Kampeska and is the best place to access all of these opportunities.

Perkins County Commission has declared a burn ban effective July 31, 2026. Shadehill Recreation Area, Llewellyn Johns Recreation Area and Hugh Glass Lakeside Use Area are also implementing the burn ban. This also includes all private cabins surrounding the reservoir.
\r\n\r\nPropane and Charcoal grills will still be allowed for cooking.
\r\n\r\nNestled on the shores of Shadehill Reservoir, Shadehill Recreation Area offers opportunities to enjoy land and water based activities. The reservoir is one of western South Dakota's few large lakes.

Sica (pronounced she-cha) Hollow State Park, established in 1968, is located in northeastern South Dakota. It is a trail explorer’s destination. Adventurers, whether on horseback, foot, or mountain bike, can explore the potential of the 10 miles of multiuse trails. Experience a mature oak forest, scenic prairie vistas, winding draws that descend into the tranquil streams that follow through the park. The flow of water comes from deep beneath the park, where underground water wells up to the surface creating beautiful and unique springs, bogs, and waterfalls.
\r\n\r\nSica Hollow State Park offers year-round potential, but one of the most popular times to experience the park is in the fall. During the fall, the park becomes one of South Dakota’s top destinations to view a kaleidoscope of vivid fall colors from native oak, aspen, maple, and elm trees. While fall is certainly a time to not miss, there are countless moments to take in all year. Wildflowers in bloom in early summer and spring, stary skies during the summer while enjoying a campfire, or seeing the beautiful ice flows from the springs during the winter. There is more to take in than can be experienced in a day which constitutes a stay in the park’s campground to base camp out of.
\r\n\r\nSica Hollow State Park has also earned attention nation-wide. The park is part of two major geological features. The Glacial River Warren and Coteau des Prairies, which are designated National Natural Landmarks. Inside the park, The Trail of the Spirits, a self-guided interpretive foot trail, was designated as a National Recreation Trail in 1971.

Lake Francis Case draws visitors to Snake Creek Recreation Area. The park is popular with boaters and anglers, as well those looking for scenic beauty along the Missouri River. History buffs will enjoy knowing that the Lewis and Clark expedition traveled through the area, where they were told to watch for "burning bluffs" along the river.
\r\n\r\nThe Lewis and Clark expedition has forever left its mark on this area with the story of Private George Shannon. Shannon, the youngest member of the expedition at 19 years old, became lost when he was sent to fetch strayed horses. Thinking the crew had moved up river, Shannon raced to meet the boats. When he was found exhausted and starving two weeks later, he quickly learned that the expedition had been downstream from him the entire time.

Spearfish Canyon Nature Area includes the Roughlock Falls, Spearfish Falls, and the Savoy Pond area. The canyon is considered one of the most beautiful locations in the Black Hills. A trail system connects all three areas and offers spectacular views of the waterfalls and foliage in the fall.
\r\n\r\nBird watching, wildlife viewing, fishing, and picnicking can all be enjoyed in the nature area. Be on the lookout for the rare American Dipper, a stocky, gray bird often spotted catching its food underwater by swimming or walking on the stream bottom.

They came to the site because they had heard that little people with big heads inhabited the mound. At the mound the expedition didn't find any little people, but did find a "most beautiful landscape."
\r\n\r\nYears later, the Flood Control Act of 1944, authorized the construction of six main dams in the Missouri River Basin. In addition to flood control, the intent of this act was to provide hydroelectric power. With the damming of the river, most of the sites where the Lewis and Clark Expedition camped or visited are now underwater. There are very few places where a person can stand today and know that Lewis and Clark stood in the same exact location. Spirit Mound is one of those few special sites.
\r\n\r\nIn order to provide Spirit Mound visitors with an opportunity similar to what Lewis and Clark experienced, the site is being restored. Prairie grasses and other native plants are being reestablished. The prairie restoration began in 2001 and will take decades of growth before it becomes a good representation of the prairie as seen by the expedition. Spirit Mound has a rich variety of prairie wildflowers and grasses and is home to Fritillary butterflies, birds and many other prairie animals.

Union Grove State Park began as a County Park around 1936. The Brule Creek was dammed to create a small lake. The lake has since filled with silt and the dam was removed. The land was leased to the State of South Dakota in 1946. Since then, the park has been host to residents and vacationers alike.
\r\n\r\nRich glacial soils support a lush growth of native woods in this hidden treasure. Horseback riders, hikers, bikers and cross-country skiers enjoy several miles of trail through the forest along Brule Creek. The trees and plants attract a variety of birds sure to keep botanists and birdwatchers entertained for hours. Campers enjoy the quiet well-shaded campsites, and the horse camp is the perfect base for a weekend of riding.
\r\n\r\nDeer, wild turkeys, beaver and many small animals abound in the park as well as a variety of trees and plant life. Birdwatchers will enjoy the opportunities to see many species of birds including cardinals, orioles, grosbeak, warblers, red-winged blackbirds, blue jays, pheasants and wild turkeys.
\r\n\r\nAll types of hunting is allowed within the park from October 1 until April 30th during designated hunting seasons.
\r\n\r\nUncased firearms and bows are not allowed with the campground and picnic areas. Please refer to Hunting Handbook for more info.
\r\n\r\nThe multi-use trails are ideal for horses and mountain bikes and spand up to 4.3 miles. The hiking trail is foot traffic only and is 1.2 miles.

A popular campsite for the Arikara and Mandan people in the past, West Whitlock now draws modern-day campers and fishermen to its shores. When the area became a park, it was named for Mrs. J.F. Whitlock, whose pioneering family once owned the land. Whitlock Crossing was the name given to a small settlement that operated a ferry across the river near the area.
