Characteristics

  • State Threatened
  • Slender, brownish-blue back with dark specks and a light underside
  • Small eyes
  • Flattened snout with ventral mouth with conspicuous barbels at the corners of their mouth
  • Longitudinal ridge or keel is present on dorsal scales
  • Diet: Little is known about the feeding habitats, however they are believed to be bottom feeders with external taste buds; feeding mainly on invertebrates and sediment materials
  • Habitat: Prefer areas with moderate to strong current on large turbid rivers and tributaries directly connected to larger rivers
  • Distribution: Western South Dakota, within the Missouri, White, and Cheyenne River drainages
