Characteristics

  • Federally Endangered
  • State Endangered
  • Slender and flattened greyish-white body
  • Snout is flattened and shovel-shaped with downward facing mouth
  • Body armor on top and sides, but lacking plates on belly
  • Bases of outer chin barbels slightly farther back than bases of inner barbels
  • Outer barbels twice as long as inner barbels
  • Similar Species include Shovelnose Sturgeon, which has belly covered with bony plates and bases of barbels are aligned and similar in length
  • Diet: Bottom dwelling snails, insects, crustaceans and small fish
  • Habitat: Large, silty rivers with natural hydrographs, sand bars, sand flats and gravel bars
  • Distribution: Central South Dakota, within the Missouri River and its tributaries
