Characteristics

  • State Threatened
  • Elongate, cylindrical sucker with a long pointed snout
  • Range in color from gray to black with a light colored underside
  • Breeding males have a wide, crimson band on their side that extends onto the snout
  • Diet: Primarily plant material but will also include small crustaceans, snails, and insect larvae
  • Habitat: Prefer cool, clear, spring-fed streams and lakes
  • Distribution: Western South Dakota, within spring-fed tributaries to the Belle Fourche and Cheyenne River drainages in the northern Black Hills
