Characteristics

  • State Endangered
  • Small, dark olive to silvery minnow with a single dark lateral stripe ending with a spot at the base of the tail fin
  • Breeding males have brassy to bright yellow or red bellies
  • Diet: Algae, mollusks and a variety of aquatic insects
  • Habitat: Prefer cool, headwater streams and ponds with dense aquatic vegetation
  • Distribution: Western South Dakota, within tributaries to the Cheyenne, Belle Fourche, Little White, and Keya Paha River drainages
